RHEL 4 Boot Error

When I boot my Linux RHEL system, I get the following error:

Checking root filesystem
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 ..................... [Failed]

***An error occurred during the file system check.
***Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
***when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue):

1 - if I type the root password, I can get to a prompt
2 - if I type "control-d, the system reboots

I can type in the root password and I get a prompt as follows:

Code:
(Repair filesystem) 1 #
Can someone please explain the best thing to do? I can cd to any directory and recover data but I would like to resolve this issue and avoid reinstalling the OS and applications.

Thanks for any help!

It seems that /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 is trying to be mounted and it does not exist. Maybe a directory was mounted on it that no longer is there. Post the output of cat /etc/fstab.
