RHEL 4.4 AS device creation problem

Hi Everybody:

We have a problem that I'd like to throw out in the hopes that someone can lend a hand trying to solve it.

RHEL 4.4 AS 32bit
HP Proliant BL20p servers
Cluster configuration (3 nodes)
QLlogic and PowerPath software

We are moving from EVA to EMC SAN, thus the two different HA MP softwares.

PowerPath fails to start.

As near as we can figure, the O/S simply does not want to create any files in the device directory. i.e. PowerPath startup success depends on it being able to create a raw device file in /dev/raw, and it can't. Or else it does, but the file does not actually get created.

This system did crash recently, and we are just now trying to migrate the SAN.

I was not there when it crashed, and we have nothing about the actual crash event to work with.

Steps I've taken:
1. Manually created regular and block files in /dev as root. Works fine.
2. Since the system crashed, I manually rsynced the node with another node in the same cluster as best I could.

Found this error in /var/log/messages:
Could not open cluster lock lun /dev/raw/raw1

Found that /dev/raw did not exist.
Created /dev/raw (this directory gets lost on reboot!)
created raw device for PP.
Device does not show up in /dev/raw, despite showing as being bound with the raw utility.
Tried to start PP - failed.

i.e. fresh boot, and then:
bash-3.00# ls -al /dev/raw
ls: /dev/raw: No such file or directory
bash-3.00# raw -qa
bash-3.00# mkdir /dev/raw
bash-3.00# ls -ald /dev/raw
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 40 May 11 17:17 /dev/raw
bash-3.00# raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdj1
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 145
bash-3.00# ls -al /dev/raw
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 40 May 11 17:17 .
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 5240 May 11 17:17 ..
bash-3.00# raw -qa
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 145

This shows that the raw util binds /dev/raw/raw1 with the block device, and yet that raw device that is bound, is not present.

This seems to be the point of the problem, as PowerPath appears to be trying to do this on startup.

If anyone could lend a hand with this, we would appreciate it. If we don't get the solution after a few days, we will rebuild the node. However, we would prefer to find the solution, if possible, than to leave it a mistery.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
