RHE 3 - Trouble Adding An External USB Drive

Team,

I'm trying to add an external USB drive to one of my RHEL 3 boxes.

It doesn't seem to be working.

dmesg:
hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x1058/0x901) is not claimed by any active driver.

$ uname -a
Linux kf1 2.4.21-37.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Sep 7 13:28:55 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

# mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1
mke2fs 1.32 (09-Nov-2002)
mke2fs: No such device or address while trying to determine filesystem size
#

# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 6)
#

Any suggestions? Is this a patch / kernel issue because this box is so old? Any suggestions? This box is long sense out of contract with Red Hat.

Thanks,

Mark

The system sees the drive and gives the device /dev/sdb1 so you might just need to configure Hotplug.

The manuals for Red Hat 3 are still online here
http://www.rdhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/

It looks like the System Administration Guide has what you want in 7.1.1. Hotplug Devices.
