RH9, xmms, intel 845GL chipset, poor audio quality

Hi, I have been using xmms on a machine with onboard intel 845GL chipset which is used for the onboard integrated audio.

Now, sound works, and is detected and configured during install, but the quality is terrible. It sounds scratchy/distorted and just plain bad.

If I use the EQ in xmms and lower the preamp volume (alot) and increase the players master volume, then the sound quality improves to be usuable but is still bad. I have only tried MP3, but I dont believe it is related to the mp3 decoder or I would have seen many complaints about the bad audio quality.

Any ideas?

I had a machine recently that had a similar problem and I think that's the card it used. Turned out to be a bug in the driver module. Do some googling and see if you can snag a newer version of the module than you have now.

I have done quite a bit of googling about this but did not find anything specific to my problem. But not I will try some more googling with looking for information more specific to 'driver module' .

I have the same audio quality issues with rh9.0

My sound card is -- ALi Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device. I got this information with 'lspci'. I have also googled this issue but found nothing of yet, helpful. ALSA had been mentioned to me by someone, but going to the alsa page was a bit overwhelming.. I'm not really sure what to do to change drivers, if that is what I am to do.

Any help or pointer in the right direction would be great =).
