RH9 and my hardware / question before I get rid of Windows

Hi,

I am tried now several distributions and actually I prefer Debian, but for some reason when I want to use Gnome or KDE, all problems are starting and I am not that patient in the moment.

Long story short : I run RH9 now for a while on my little guy X11 / IBM Laptop without any trouble ...

Now, its big brother called workstation, would like to go into that family too

Anyway, before I start to get rid of Windows I would like to know if people have a good or bad experience with my hardware as I am sure I am not the only one using it ...

This is my hardware :

GeForce 5900 Ultra with 256 MB (should not be a prob I guess)
CMK001 (or something) aka Soundblaster Digital 5.1

NIC is not worth to be mention as every distribution has found it so far.

Monitor = Yijama 481S

no Raid etc.

Is this worth or not ? How will be the performance, any suggestions regarding this hardware ?

What I noticed on the other Linux distributions is that ALWAYS the Microfone is not loud enough. So I have to scream until people can hear me (using Teamspeak for exmaple) even I turned the sensitivity from the application up ...

Any help / suggestions / warnings are appreciated

Thanks

You need to get yourself a newer distribution instead of Redhat 9. Support and security upgrades for Redhat 9 were discontinued almost a year ago. Since you are used to Redhat, then get yourself Fedora Core or Redhat Enterprise Linux (the two distros that replaced Redhat 9 and below).

I have tried the Enterprise RedHat AS as I have a license for that, but to be honest, I haven't had much luck with that .. maybe it was overkill, but still ...... nothing really worked with it ...

SimplyMEPIS is a Debian distro on a LiveCD you can test your hardware. You could also do a dual boot so you can use Windows as a backup, and for a few Windows only programs.
