RH9 + ACPI -> help (poweroff)

I'm trying to get ACPI working under Redhat 9 so when I use the "poweroff" command, the computer actually turns off. In my attempts, I've done the following:

I patched the kernel source using the patch located on this site (i'm using 2.4.20-8smp kernel).
I ran the patch from /usr/src/linux2.4
I did a "make menuconfig"
I selected the new ACPI & ACPI/Powerbutton - including both (not as modules).
I saved my kernel conf
I ran "make dep"
I added "acpi=on" to the kernel line in grub.conf

and it still isn't working.

can someone offer me some help on this one?

It has been my experience that ACPI doesn't work well with SMP kernels.

that's weird.

it works under Fedora.... but the NICs don't work under Fedora (baffling), so I switched back to RH9.
