RH enterprise updates without up2date?
 

I am installing RHES 3 and curious if there are yum or apt-get fresh rpms available anywhere. Is there any other way to get the updates other than up2date?

The official RHEL 3 does not have yum, but I am sure you can install yum from other sources (CentOS uses yum by default). You can use the DAG & DRIES repos.

Is this a viable way to get updates for an install that I have not bought support for? Is there a way to get these updates any other way?

I have seen the mention of CentOS on other threads. Is this as stable as RHES 3 in your opinion?

You can't get official upgrades from Redhat for RHEL unless you paid a subscription. CentOS is a RHEL rebuild (without the Redhat branding), so its as good as RHEL.

One of the values that a Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription provides is access to Red Hat Network - an easy way to get your updates. Bundle that with technical support for any issues you might run into or any configuration problems you might have and you really start to see the value.

Of course this is all dependant on what you end goal is and what your end O/S delivearbles are. Good Luck.

Thank you for your reply and I respect your opinion. The reason I am choosing to bypass the up2date process is because I have an issue with the unnecessary trust relationship that must be in place in order to get those updates via up2date. Hey, just because I am paranoid doesn't mean that they are not out to get me. Kidding aside though, I think the convenience comes at a risk.

You mean you want to run RHEL in your production without paying for subscription? Without any support? Great going mate, I hope the trust relationship your employer has with you is not unneccesary (atleast just hope that he doesn't think that way :))
