remove all the icons from the gnome desktop

Using gconf-editor=>apps=>nautilus=>desktop works in SuSE 9.2 and Mandrake 10.1 as well. Just uncheck the standard icons you don't want and also uncheck show_desktop in gconf-editor=>apps=>nautilus=>preferences to prevent other icons from being drawn. No need to reboot...the changes are invoked immediately.

ahhh's response worked GREAT!!!

Just mkdir called desktop and move the %gconf.xml file in there with the suggestions that ahhh made, and log out and back in and amazing!!! the icons are gone!!!!!

Just drag the unwnated icons to the bottom of the desktop, they will dissapear if your panel is not in the way. If your panel is at the bottom where a traditional windows taskbar is, it will try to add the icon to the panel. Therefor you need to move the panel wherever, and drag the icons to the bottom of the screen until you cannot see them. That way nautilus is still working properly.
