Redhat security update question?

If i install RH9 on a new system how do i go about getting all the security updates since i cannot connect to the update service anymore? I dont care about the RH specific program updates. Just security stuff. Should i even bother continuing to use RH9?

I guess you'd have to install/update programs via rpm's / from source and compile new kernels by hand if you can't connect to the service.

To get the specific files you could use aptget or a similar service - google is also nice ;)

You are still able to follow the errata releases via redhats site so you can focus your search for specific files from there.

If you are starting from scratch on a new machine why not venture into Debian or Gentoo - that way you would probably have access to security updates etc. as soon as they generally are produced/become available and at the same time you would have access to cutting edge software technology

Yes i want to try Gentoo or debian but i am trying to figure out if its easier to downoad a new DIstro and set it up or just use my RH9 and try to update it and set it up again.

I understand your predicament - You need to weigh the new stuff you probably have to learn in order to migrate against the fact that RedHat will discontinue their up2date service, for some distros as early as Dec. 31 this year and others in April next year...

If you have the possibility you could try to set your RedHat up again and then pour over the Debian and Gentoo sites for information on setting up... Then back up your important stuff and jump into the thick of it - That's where I'm going!
