Redhat GNOME runs slow when network is enabled

Hello Everyone,

My system is an AMD Althon with 128MB RAM running redhat 9.0 and gnome 2.0 connected to a DSL router with static IP addressing. When I start with network disabled my system runs fine but when I start network everything slows down to an absolute crawl. It takes about 45 seconds to start a terminal window. I have set my security level to off and turned off all non-essential services with no success.

Also, when log into gnome it gives me a message saying it cannot find . , add .. to /etc/hosts. In response I have added a line to my /etc/hosts file : 192.168.1.2 ultra-eth0.biscit.net ultra-eth0, but this doesn't do anything.

Is this more than one problem or 2 symptoms of the same problem? How do I fix this?

I cannot answer your questions. Just tell you my case.

I use a router, when my ISP have problems RH9 would start up really slow. I have disabled many useless services and solved that problem. startup is fast as well.

Try using a unique host name in redhat-config-network and change localhost.localdomain to something more meaningful to you (as you have done)... then, edit /etc/hosts and change localhost.localdomain to the name you chose earlier (you may have to log out and back into GNOME as the host name change will prevent you from opening up a terminal... solution, open one before you change the name.) This worked for me... perhaps try a shorter name?
