Redhat 9.0 gtk+ upgrade hand holding :-)

Hey,

i'm a relative newbie... all i know is get the rpms- then rpm -i filename and it works...

now i want to upgrade gimp and it tells me i need gtk+ devel, glib devel and on and on....
should be no prob but i'm scared from a past experience... soon after starting with linux i was doing something similar and goofed up my system, had to re-install linux. don't want to go there again

so i've got all these packages and tarballs, fontconfig, glib, gtk+.. about a dozen of em...

will i f#@$ up my system if i try to rpm -i whatever .... then when it says conflicts with package whatever 1.2.0.1 - rpm -e whatever 1.2.0.1 then rpm -i again... this is usually good for simple stuff, but with gtk i'm worried this might cause problems.

is there a particular order to go about upgrading all this gtk stuff?
is there a way to backup system as is so if one of these installs goes awry i can go back to current setup?

i really love my redhat now... i just wanted the new gimp, please help me ugrade this without destroying what i have. :)

RTFM didn't work

Hey there,

i've tried reading the f%#$ manual... and it's all about installing gtk from scratch. i tried this before and screwed up my linux box and had to start over.

does anyone out there have any expierence in uprgrading gtk 1.2 and 2.4 in redhat 9.0. as far as i can tell, red hat 9 comes with gtk 2.2 only... is there a proper order for uninstalling the orig gtk and glib and then reinstalling the new one. is this inherently risky and no matter what i could lose it all?

am i overly paranoid?

anyone?
