Red Hat slow loading applications

Hi!

I know there are already some threads around about "slow Red Hat" but I didn't find any about my problem.

Red Hat was running fine for a few days but now it takes forever do load applications. It's just loading the application. The application performance looks normal.

pine is taking 40 seconds to start, emacs more than one minute. Almost all programs are taking forever to start but when running, every thing looks ok.

During loading, I don't see any major activity in my hard drive. The HD activity led is only lit for less than a second from time to time (don't know how to explain this in English).

This happens in both X and text mode.

Anyone has any clue about what might be happening? Or where should I start trying to find out what's happening?

Thanks!

HOWZIT

run the cmd free or top in text mode and see how much memory is available that is virtual as well as RAM. Alsom take a look at cpu utilization and see if any apps r using resoureces that r not normal. Under the GUI with gnome use gnome-system-monitor.

Also disable all services that u don´t use check that buy running chkconfig --list |grep on

Good Luck and VIVA FCP

Hi!

I found the solution for my problem in another forum. Someone had the exact same problem and told me how he got it fixed.

I was somewhat surprised with the solution but it really worked!

My host name was not defined correctly!! It was incomplete.

I redefined my host name and it now works fine!

This site is was useful:
