Red Hat Licensing Help

Guys,

We are on RH ES4. I am logging into RHN and see a version 5 for downloadable. At the moment I am downloadig it.

How is the licensing work? We have the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (Basic) w/ Web Support until next May 2008.

It says that I need an installation number in order to install. I found that in your description profile. I am not sure legally I can install it.

Thanks,
Tony

Ask the company, that's what you paid for.

Usually, Redhat include upgrades to new versions in the license. But I think you need to use a special upgrade process rather than the install disk. Something like:

up2date --upgrade-to-release=4

or something.
But ask them. If you are worried about the license expiring, migrate to CentOS instead.

Of course you can. When you have a subscription for RHEL, Red Hat does not care if it is 32-bit, 64-bit, RHEL 2.1, 3, 4 or 5.

Read the FAQ on installation numbers at:

https://www.redhat.com/support/resou...ation_numbers/

If you have one subscription, you will only be able to get updates to a single system, but that's really easy to work around. I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader to figure out.
