Red Hat kicks sand in Open Sources face.

"Open-source company Red Hat will initially offer its hypervisor management tools for Windows systems only." http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/softwa...?scid=rss_z_nw

From a business perspective it makes sense so I disagree.

MensaWater 09-09-2009 06:05 AM

This is retarded in the extreme for a company that makes its bread and butter on Open Source.

I don't care how "pragmatic" it is. It might also be "pragmatic" for them to quit doing Linux and become a Windows reseller but that doesn't mean those of us out here in the world will buy Windows just because RedHat decided to do this.

Having been a fan of RedHat/Fedora/CentOS for some time this decision truly annoys me. Maybe they should rename themselves DunceHat.

a lot of companies do that. Perhaps if they release windows tools more people with a MS back ground will learn linux...

Agreed, A publicly held corporations first duty is to its shareholders but the stock has tripled in the last year ( http://www.nasdaq.com/aspx/dynamic_c...charttype=line ). I don't think it would hurt to spread a little love our way.

Well, like watcher69b also noticed it says initially, so you don't know now if it will or won't and when. BTW the stock argument I personally don't care for: I can't imagine what an artificial valuation based on limitless greed and pure risk holds that we (or at least I) would take interest in with respect to anything GNU/Linux.

mjolnir 09-09-2009 07:12 PM

Not to be picky but you did bring the "business perspective" to this discussion. At least these guys had the cojones not to try to justify their proposed initial Windows only incorporation of hypervisor tools as some kind of oversight. My very loose interpretation is that they just told their Linux kin, "Hey we just tripled our worth in the worst economy since the Great Depression and we are going to keep dragging it in!"

unSpawn 09-11-2009 04:54 AM

Yeah I did but there's a difference in strategy between what is required to sustain a healthy business and sustaining the type of growth shareholders would see as "value".

mjolnir 09-11-2009 10:26 AM

No point in beating a dead horse. We can agree to disagree and since I don't use RedHat but rather saw this as an affront to all opensource let's move on. Good luck.

Funny - shareholders only see stock price increase as "value" so corporate execs often do things that are bad for the business in the long run simply to generate short term increase in stock price. The stockholders invariably file suit after the fact for management behaving exactly the way they forced them to by voting with their wallets.
