do one thing what I would have done if I was in your place.
First of all take a backup of your 40 gb Hdd data on 80 Gb and make a clean install of Linux on 40 Gb machine. This would lead to a better handling of machine as well as data.

well it will take some of your time but its a better option

just use the keys alt+crtl+F1(or F2....tillF6, F7 is for GUI and F8 to F12 is for future use)
