Red Hat 9 display problems on laptop?

Has anyone installed red hat 9 in a laptop with an intal 830 video card and manage to set X display at 1024*768-24?

I found intel´s support web page for this video card(intel 830), I do everything the document tells me to do except this
Quote:

Alternately, load your kernel config file, save the config, then run "make dep"
I don´t know what to do, how do I load the kernel, what do I save?, since I´m a linux newbie would anyone tell me how this is done?, or if anyone has manage to configure X to display at 1024*768-24, with this tipe of video card, please tell me how!, i would really aprecciate it...

P.D. please excuse my english, im from Colombia, and im still learning english!...

Quick quetion does anything get displayed on your screen or not? Try be a little more specific on the error displayed.

On this site there is everthing u will like to know about laptops and linux www.linux-laptop.net also try www.xfree86.org to see if your vga card is supported with X. Last but not least try www.hardware.redhat.com/hcl this is hardware that is certified by RH

Ill try to be more specific, the linux laptop net, i already tried, ill have to check the linux compatibility and Xfree86 new realease.

X does work, my video card is an intel 830m with 32 mb of video ram, the problem is that X can only ber display at 1024*768 at 8bits and less, i want to be able to display X at 1024*768 at 24bits, i already tried redhat-config-xfree86, and im trying to do exactly as it says on the intel support website for 830m video card in linux,(i cant paste no url since i just have 3 posts), but i cannot do the part that says
Quote:

Alternately, load your kernel config file, save the config, then run "make dep"
because i dont know what it means or what im suppose to do...

So what im asking is: what must i do to get X to work at 1024*768 at 24bits?
How i load the kerenel config file? make dep? save the config, what changes should i make?

Did u download a file that has to be compiled or instruction in order to make it work?

Yes theres a dripkg.*.rpm that I downloaded, but im suppose to run it after i do the kernel config file thingy, i reebot and start linux in text mode and try to install it, but agppart.o and another error appears, then i cannot even start X
the instruction are in here

U may skip that part that they mentioned Alternately, load your kernel config file, save the config, then run "make dep" this is compiling your kernel which I don' t suggest u do for now. Do everything they mentioned except for that part it should work

I already tried and I even tried to compile the kernel but theres a compilation error in half the proccess, so i don't know what to do, and the rpm file does not work unless i compile the kernel since it has to be patched.

what kernel r u running type uname -r this will tell u what version u running. Then try downloading a later version in a rpm format and maybe u wiil be in lucky that it maybe activated in the kernel.
