Red Hat 9 2.6.9 Kernel

Ok, I tried to update from the 2.4 version to the newest kernel on kernel.org, which happens to be 2.6.9...

I used one of the guides from LQ, and it seemed to work great, then on reboot grub now says something about not executable format for the old one, and the new one is unuseable because i must have forgot to make the initial ramdisk...

anyway, is there any easy way to fix this, or is a reinstall required? if it needs a reinstall, im just gonna goto fedora 2 or 3

by fix this, i mean get back to linux, either kernel, right now i have no preference, and i do have damnsmall linux if that will come in handy...

well, not that it helps with getting RH9 to 2.6.9, but upgrading the broken RH9 to FC2 fixes everything.

HOWZIT

Try boot with your cdrom into linux rescue mode this will mount a vitual disk and in ther u will be able to fix ramdisk that was not done as well as the grub update that might be needed.

For future reference, once one got the rescue system running and partions mounted, how would one go about fixing the initrd?

Howzit

Execute a line like mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.5.img 2.4.5 (this assumes lk 2.4.5 is being build). This should result in the file initrd-2.4.5.img being created.Do not forget to update your grub/lilo to piont ot new kernel
