Red Hat 9.0 on an AMD k6 233 Mhz
 

Hi there,

I've bought a handbook about Linux Red Hat 9.0 (Shrike) called "Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed". Also two cd's with teh publisher's edition of Linux Red Hat 9 is included. I wanted to instal red hat 9 on an AMD k6 233 Mhz, with 10 GB Hard Disk and 64 MB of RAM...But it doesn't work. When I install it, I get after selecting the packages and formatting the hard disk, a message saying that this distribution of Red Hat couldn't install on the given system. But I thought I had the minimum reuirements, or is an AMD k6 not supported anymore???

I also tried to install red hat 9 on the 10GB hard disk using another PC (Intel Pentium 3 with much more RAM) It installs and runs perfect, but when I put the installed hard disk back to the AMD k6, Linux woul'dn't boot. When I choose linux to start in the GRUB bootmanager, the PC just reboots. Only Linux has been installed on the disk.

Who can help me??? What's te problem??

so K6-2 is supported it seems

I have an AMD-k6 II 400 MHz with 256 MB RAM ( I upgraded to 256 MB long back), and Red Hat 9 works cool on my system. A point to note is that these recent linux distros need more RAM if not more CPU power.

64MB is sufficient, however 128 MB is recommended.

Try installing redhat through text mode.

I have k6II w/ 64mb ram (soon to be 128 (max on this frame))
I am trying the same "RedHat Linux 9 Unleashed" book with the 2 "RH Publishers Edition" cd's and having the same problem.
Runs through the whole install setup all the way to installing the boot and the old "You are trying to install....isn't supported by RHLinux".
After looking through the RPMs on both disks the only actual kermel is for an i686 install. I am told by my local lug that I'll need the i386 kernel to run on this box. I think this is the main problem here, setting aside the memory.
I see 2.4.x i386 kernels out there (not supported by RH) I am trying to figure out what to do about it, maybe return the book & CD's, hey, no mention of "sorry, AMD's can't play here" , they can take it back to them! Maybe RH isn't the way to go.

try downloading a different iso image...the copy with the book may be bad. I have seen rh9 work on amd 2's before.
like coolamit78 said, try text mode, your ram may not be able to handle the graphics mode well.

You may have to install on an AMD system. When you installed on the intel box, it compiled the kernel for an intel processor. Is there a reason you can't install on the AMD system?

What an idiot. I didn't read your post very carefully....Sorry.

I have had problems with RH8,9 with firewire on several boxes. I finally figured out I needed to pass nofirewire to the kernel before the install. Do you have firewire? I haven't been real impressed with the installers for 8 or 9. Have you tried RH 7.3? It has been a very stable one for me - I have been using it on a server for a couple of years.

K6-2 is supported an 64M should be enough, and a full install only takes about 2-3G. Do you have any funky hardware (firewire esp.)?

I have sucessfully installed RH 9 on my amd k6-2/400Mhz with 196 mb ram
minimum reqiuirements are P II 400Mhz processor and 128 mb ram ur pc is far below try RH 8 or 7.3, my pc runs slower thand windows so its beter to go for 8 or 7,3 or 6
