random mouse events - wheel no longer works

I run Redhat 9. My Logitech cordleess, optical mouse/keyboard (MX700) has functioned fine under RH 7.3, 8 and 9. After visiting a Mathworld URL my system seems to generate random mouse events - both movements and button clicks. Also my scroll wheel stopped working. I've rebooted, tried changing my XF86config (which has worked fine up to now), but nothing works.
The URL contains a live 3D java applet graphic that can be manipulated with the mouse.
I've googled the problem and others seems to have had it but no solution.
Does this sound familaiar to anyone?
My XF86config looks like:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "MouseManPlusPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection

thanks.

And I'm assuming the mouse doesn't do this on other systems? Have you even tested it? My guess would be crappy software support for this mouse but could very well be hardware issues as well, since it worked previously.

I thought of swapping mice and systems - I should've before I posted.
When I swapped mice/keyboards I noticed that the wire from the mouse docking station to the PS/2 mouse and keyboard port was pinched under the edge of the stand of the 19" CRT monitor. Swapping showed it to be a hardware problem after all. I likely damaged one of the wires in the bundle.
Thanks for your time.
