Cool puzzle JRE,RedHat, and alternatives tool

Hello,
This is a RedHat ES3, 2.4 kernel web server.
Installed 1.6 JRE but older one shows
# java -version
java version "1.5.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-b64)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0-b64, mixed mode)

read this post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...roblems-460576, but my display is different enough to give me pause.

# /usr/sbin/alternatives --display java
java - status is manual.
link currently points to /usr/share/java/libgcj-java-placeholder.sh
/usr/share/java/libgcj-java-placeholder.sh - priority 100
slave rmiregistry: /usr/bin/grmiregistry
slave rmiregistry.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/grmiregistry.1.gz
Current `best' version is /usr/share/java/libgcj-java-placeholder.s

Could you please advise steps to take to create corrected alternatives file.

Thank you very much

That is a bit old, please review (see my post #6 in the tread): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...core-6-525948/

Also one has to engage one's brain, this is a guide and only a guide. One has to think about changes in what is said in the guide compared to what is actually installed, the differences are important in getting this right.

$ /usr/sbin/alternatives --display java
java - status is manual.
link currently points to /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java - priority 1
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/java - priority 2
Current `best' version is /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin/java.

$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_03"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_03-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0_03-b05, mixed mode)

$ cat /etc/profile.d/java.sh
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/bin"
export JAVA_PATH="$JAVA_HOME"
export PATH="$PATH:$JAVA_HOME"

If you need additional help post the output from the commands in the guide.

.

This changed:
aurora # /usr/sbin/alternatives --display java
java - status is manual.
link currently points to /usr/lib/java/jre-1.6.0_03/bin/java
/usr/lib/java/jre-1.6.0_03/bin/java - priority 2
Current `best' version is /usr/lib/java/jre-1.6.0_03/bin/java.

this did not:
aurora # java -version
java version "1.5.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-b64)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0-b64, mixed mode)

aurora # ls -l /usr/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Mar 28 2007 /usr/bin/java -> ../lib/jre1.5.0/bin/java

Kinda scared to change stuff on a production box, do I remove and recreate this link?
