Problems installing KDE 3.4 on RedHat 9

Hi all,

I have installed KDE 3.4 on a RedHat 9 system from RPMs for RedHat 9. However, the problem is, each time X Window is started, I receive the message "Could not start kdeinit: check your installation". When I click OK, KDE appears to start up normally regardless, but it crashes every now and then. Also my K-menu is almost empty (all my entries lost), right-click on K, choosing "Edit menu" yields no effect whatsoever (although kmenuedit starts normally when called from the command line). Trying to start KDE manually (startkde) yields the following error message:

kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN12QProgressBarD2Ev
startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

What could be the cause of my problem? What is a relocation error anyway? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling KDE, it had no effect.

I should also mention that when installing kdelibs, it complained about QT 3.2 or greater not being installed, however since I do have QT 3.3 (compiled from source), I used --nodeps to force the RPM installation. I have also downloaded and installed Libidn which appeared to be required (although this dependency was not documented).

Thank you for your answers in advance.

It seems your qt is not being detected from kde, maybe you need the qt 3.2 (and only this) version to be installed.

You may need to set the environment variable for QTDIR to point to where you installed the newer version of Qt that you compiled.
