Problem opening a file with the .Z extension

Hello --

We are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 on one of our servers. I am trying to install an application that consists of two files with the .Z extension. I have tried opening the files with gunzip and compress, but the output from both commands indicated the files are not in either gzip or compressed format.

What other commands or utilities can I use to open the files in question?

Thanks.

The name of the file is not relevant and not necessarily related to its content. What does the utility file say the format of the file really is?

What is the output from the command:

file your_file.Z

A bit late...

Hello --

Thank-you for your help. Once I ran the file command, I discovered the files in question were already in rpm format. I renamed the files to reflect the package type, and both installed successfully on the server.
