problem after installing red hat
Hi
I just installed my new red hat linux webserver installed packages: GNOME SMB server web sever and after the reboot (witch seemed very normal to me) my screen started flashing on and off I could log on but there was no graphical mode installed anyone know whats the problem (i'm not experienced enough to use only the text mode, so i would like to have a graphical mode and i would also like my screen to stop flashing) (it does not flash while booting i can read everything perfect even when linux is starting up no problem, until the logon screen) thanx in advance kedidie |
I fixed the flashing screen stuff
but I still can't get into graphical mode anyone? |
Did you install the X packages? I think by default, no X packages are installed on a RHEL server edition, but I could be wrong.

It would help a lot of you tell us which version and architecture you are running. (RHEL5-64bit)
|
I installed everything there was to instal
including the x window system if that is what you meen if not how can I still install them its red hat 7.1 server edition petium 3 hdd 24 GB IDE |
Support for RH9 was dropped in 2004 and RH7 was dropped a few years before that. After RH9 they switched to the RHEL designation. They are now on version RHEL5.2. If you are running post 2000(?) hardware you are going to have a tough time getting RH7 running, plus almost no one else is still running it. While RHEL charges to download and update, Centos does not. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed.
On a PIII you want at least 256mb of ram for the GUI to be useful and you will be a lot happier with at least 512. |
I have 512 ram
I don't want anything else RH7 is running perfect has al the functions I want it to have but I just want to have some kind of a graphical mode |
You are perfectly welcome to do as you wish, but understand that means that you will find virtually no assistance. Since essentially no one else is still running RH7(and have not for years), there is essentially no one left with current experience on that version to help you. It is a little like asking for assistance on a Dos 3.3 problem.

In addition, it will not have had any SECURITY updates since then, so its wide open to exploits.
Your choice though... |
