Greetings all, I'm a Linux newbie and here's the deal- I just installed RH9 Linux on my PC (Already run Win XP as dual booting) and can't connect to the internet. Here's the problem (I think)- my Ethernet card is screwed up and as a result, I connect via USB (on Win XP). No problem there as the USB drivers are on the installation CD (I have a Terayon TJ615 cable modem). But I can't seem to find a way to connect by USB in Linux- plus I can't find any Linux drivers for this modem. I've tried fiddling around w/ the Linux internet connect wizard, but w/o any luck. Is there any way I can connect by USB in Linux w/ this modem, or is my only choice is to buy a new Ethernet card? Thanks for any helpful feedback.
You maybe better off investing in ethernet, because most Linux distros tend to have problems with USB interenet connections. Also Redhat 9 and belwo are now obsolete, with no support and official security upgrades, so you should really think about using a newer distro such as fedora core.
I don't understand your problem very well, but I'll offer what I can. Are you trying to dial in to get a connection via a USB modem? Or are you trying to get access to a high speed connection? What exactly is being connected to the USB port?
One suggestion I have is to try the latest version of Fedora Core. Red Hat 9 was the last version of the desktop operating system released by Red Hat itself. They then turned the software over to the Fedora Foundation who subsequently released Fedora Core 1.0 (which would have been Red Hat 10). Fedora Core is now up to version 4.0.
With Linux, your best bet for hardware support is to upgrade to one of the latest distributions.
Thanks for the responses. Funny enough, yesterday I somehow managed to get the internet connection going, purely by luck. I fooled around with the internet connection wizard and tried several setting changes and reboots...and all of a sudden, my PC was connected. I still don't know the exact step/s I did, but it worked!
