Question Password authentication failure

I am pretty new to Redhat and am on release 2.6.9-42.ELsmp AS release 4. Today I tried changing a user's password as root using the passwd command. I got an Authentication Failure complaint. What would be the reason for that?

What was the exact error message?

It is a stand alone machine? Any NIS/LDAP? Just using simple /etc/passwd and /etc/shawdow files? Any permission problems on one of these files?

Any PAM misconfiguration? Is the /etc/ folder mounted on some different partition with readonly (ro) mount?

Try generating a passwd hash (grub-md5-crypt command for example) and editing the /etc/shadow file directly. Does this change the user password? Could you login using the new password?

Try using syslogd to see the extra error message log.

"Auth failure" sounds like your PAM conf got changed. Check /etc/pam.d/system-auth file. You can make a backup of it and then regenerate it using authconfig utility. Does this help??
