Package manager opens and then closes abruptly

When I try to open the Package Manager in RH8 it opens and says it is Checking Package Status and then before it completes the wondow closes. In other words, I can't use it.

Anyone seen this? Anyone know a fix?

Kind regards,
TAH

I've never used the graphical tool but it sounds like you may have a problem with your rpm database (this is just a wild guess based on your description). What happens when you run something like rpm -qa | head

Start a graphical console, then run redhat-config-packages from it. You'll get error output in the console. That error output would be interesting. There have been several problems related to the redhat-install-packages command. But it might be that you're missing something, e.g. the comps package.

Misc,

I'm glad to hear you suggest that... because I just did it just minutes before I read your suggestioin! hehe

The output from redhat-config-packages is:

File "/usr/share/redhat-config-packages/MainWindow.py", line 163, in ?
comps = im.readCompsViaMethod(hdlist, progress.update)

self.setupStateDicts(packages)
File "/usr/share/redhat-config-packages/comps.py", line 420, in setupStateDict s
for prov in h[rpm.RPMTAG_PROVIDES]:
TypeError: iteration over non-sequence

My only problem now is what it means. I will continue to investigate, but any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
