Package manager for Redhat
 

Hi all.

Is there a package manager at a higher level than the RPM tool?

I'm using Redhat 9.0. Should I install urpmi? Or does redhat have its own tool?
Something that manages packages dependancies and automatic downloading and installation.

well the tool to use is rpm there is a way for it to do all the dependancies automatically the only thing is that I have it setup at home and I lack some steps to complete it therefore if u can hold on I will answer as soon as possible.

You can use YUM, I am not sure if its bundled with Redhat 9 (Its shipped with Fedora Core and RHEL). An alternative with a nice GUI frontend called Synaptic is APT, which is a port of the Debian APT package management tool.

Do you know if I will be able to add the RPMs from my Redhat CD to Yum so that it updates from the CD's if the packages are there?

Yes it is only a matter of adding the path to your CD into the yum configuration file. If you want directions for installing yum you can look at the Fedora Legacy Project. It will also allow you to get security and package updates assembled by the Fedora Legacy Community.

On another note up2date will resolve dependencies when installing a new package. For example, if I did not have Gnome installed, I could use the command up2date gnome-core to install this package and all its dependencies. Check out the man page for complete information.

You can also use the Red Hat Network to schedule unattended package installation. The packages you select are installed with any required dependencies at a later time. I've noticed that this usually occurs after midnight when you run using a Demo entitlement. I thought this was a neat feature and would recommend trying it just to see it work. To use this method you need to have rhnsd running and have your system set up with an entitlement on RHN.
