Opening a Dial-Up Connection in RedHat 9

Hi

My problem:
I am not able to open a dial-up connection to the internet in RedHat 9. I use the Dial-Up connection wizard to create a new connection. But once it is created I have to go the Network Devices wizard/or something! and then click on the connection icon and click on Activate to connect to the dial-up connection.

Do I need to install any other package to connect just like in WIntel machines.

Thanks in advance...

Hello.

Sorry I don't quite understand your question. But this is how I connect to my Internet Provider....

I used 'neat' or 'redhat-config-network' to create a modem dial up account which gets named ppp0.

Whenever i want to connect to the net I basically open up a terminal window and type 'ifup ppp0', which dials me up and connects me. When I want to disconnect I do the same but type 'ifdown ppp0'.

Thats the way I do it. The other way is open 'neat' each time and click on your ppp connection and press the 'Activate' button.

Hope this helps.

If you installed the KDE packages just open
kppp
and setup the phone number, username, and password

Easiest way I know to get connected with Linux :D

Hi

I am able to connect ok. But I am connecting as a normal user. But once I connect I am not able to browse into any sites, or check my mail. Maybe something is wrong with the way I configured it.

Your advice requested.

I had the same problem with Mandrake 9.2 which also left out the KPPP and uses the setup page. I made a description and testing the modem, putting the KPPP ikon on the desktop etc.
There's little difference than with RH so look at the pointer.

sounds like the DNS isn't setup correctly, did you enter a primary DNS server in the configuration? what error message(s) are you getting when trying to navigate to web-sites?

dialup

Right click on taskbar in blank area- select add to panel-modemlights - left click on modem lights- this should install box on your taskbar that allows you to connect internet. Right click on modem light applet - select preferences- select advanced- if ttyS? is different from what yor modem port is thn change it to correct number. If you don't know what port linux is seeing your modem on , at terminal type in "wvdialconf newconffile" don't use quotation marks - this will tell you where your modem is - also check in network device control under hardware- edit to see that ttyS? is set to proper number -Good luck

I repeat if you look at the site to get your modem working
www.orpinton.lug.org.uk/modems it will show you how to get your modem working.

I really do mean modem not so called passive devices that need drivers before
some would call modems -others call winmodems- I fear many are miss-sold devices that need Windoze to workthe rest of the missed modem functions and are passive chips devices
require your code and time to add the missing processor/functionality.

In the point over dns mentioned. You can check if it is a dns problem -though you shouldn't need to as the dns is almost always automatic using the dhcp standard protocol -unless you have diabled this. If you connect directly to a site with it's ip address - a number-, but cannot with the site's domain name, you most likely you do not have a dhcp configured, or you have disabled it.

If you want to find a sites number you need to ping from a properly configured machine to the domain name of the site (with a terminal) the reply gives you the ip number. Your own site is locally usually 127.0.0.1 (localhost), or your number/s provided by your ip, try them?

Perhaps' it is a good idea to have a list of a few ip numbers for sites rather than the domain names?
