I'm looking for a concise set of instructions on how to get my Nvidia Quadro K2000 to work in RHEL 6.5. It will ultimately be used for GPU calculations and not as an actual graphics card for display. The on-board graphics card will be used for local logins. I tried using the .run file from nvidia and a hacked together set of instructions I found online, but it didn't work properly. The driver reports that it installed properly and I ran nvidia-xconfig to set the xorg.conf file. Attempting to run the nvidia control panel gives me "you do not appear to be using the nvidia x driver". If I reboot, it won't go into init 5 automatically. From the console, logging in as root and running init 5 freezes on "starting jexec services". If I ssh in and (as root) run init 5, I am then able to log in with NX client and get the desktop, etc. Obviously something is hosed with the video driver and I don't know where to start. I tried installing the driver from Dell for RHEL 6.4, but it was "successful" and still produces the same results. This system is not in production yet and still in "sandbox" mode, so I don't mind starting over with a fresh install, as long as I have a good set of instructions on how to install the nvidia driver.
I had actually seen those instructions before, but they didn't seem too drastically different from what I had done, so I didn't run through them. I did this time and it at least brought back the local graphical login and desktop, but I still seem to have the problem of "you do not appear to be using the nvidia x driver" when I run the nvidia control panel. So I don't know if the driver is loaded or not. Also, I don't want to use it as a display card, rather do GPU calculations on it (rather, the end user does). I don't know if I need the drivers installed for that or not. Is there a way to show which driver is being used by the Nvidia card?
# egrep -i " connected|card detect|primary dev" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 24.672] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to assign any connected display devices to X screen 0.
[ 28.438] (II) MGA(1): Output VGA1 connected
I don't know if that's because I don't have a monitor hooked up to the Nvidia, only the MGA on-board card. Again, this might not be necessary if I'm not actually displaying X with that card.
At the command promt type in "lsmod | grep nouveau", if anything shows up like this;
Quote:
Module Size Used by
nouveau 639801 1
you will have to start over and follow the instructions very carefully, blacklisting nouveau and recreating the initramfs are critical You may also have to put some parameter in the xorg.conf file to "ignore EDID", you might want to google that one.

Reason: thought of something else
FIRST - yes boldcap
WHAT driver do you want to use !!!!!!!
the Nouveau ?
the Kmod-nvidia ( i would recomend the Akmod-nvidia )
or the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run
Nouveau IS installed BY default
the kmod-nvidia.rpm is in the third party repos
the *.run
is well the MANUALL install
and will take a bit of WORK to install
as in install the gcc "development tools" group
then install the Kernel source for the CURRENT kernel used
Then you NEED to blacklist the Nouveau driver in udev
then REBUILD !!!!!! the boot image
then and only then install the .run
