Linux sct-15-614e-1648 3.10.0-327.4.4.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 17 15:51:24 EST 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Yesterday, I needed to reboot my machine and I mistakenly clicked on reboot and install updates (or something like that) in the gui, something I have never done, and I knew immediately after doing it that it would take me down a rabbit hole I did not want to go in.
Anyway, long story short, after the updates I have lost my gui.
When I boot my machine it tries to start the gui (I think) and if I press the esc button I can see that it hangs after printing
Quote:
started system loogin service
with an ok to its left.
After that I get a black screen with a blinking underscore symbol in which I can't type or do anything.
Luckily, if I do an alt+F2 I can get to a command line interface where I can log in. Furthermore, I can still access my machine by ssh.
If I try starting X.org manually after I log in using startx, I get the following:
Code:
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.18862 does not exist
X.Org X Server 1.17.2

I looked online and tried installing missing packages by using
Warning: group GNOME Desktop Enviornment does not exist.
Maybe run: yum groups mark install (see man yum)
Aucun paquet disponible pour installation ou mise à jour dans les groupes demandés
(yeah my system is in french)
If I try
Code:
yum groupinstall "Server with GUI"
I get
Code:
Modules complémentaires chargés*: langpacks, product-id, search-disabled-repos, subscription-manager
Maybe run: yum groups mark install (see man yum)
Aucun paquet disponible pour installation ou mise à jour dans les groupes demandés
if I look at available groups using
Code:
yum group list
I get a list of available groups in french and I have no idea which one corresponds to server with gui.
Hello everyone,
Long story. Let's start from the beginning. I have a machine running under rhel 7.2 uname -a output

The system said to try "yum groups mark install", but the best and easiest way to get this done, would be to contact Red Hat support. Using RHEL 7.2 means you're paying for access to support, repositories, and the knowledgebase. The installation groups you're after are in the repos, and unless you pay for RHEL, you won't be able to install them, at all.
You *COULD* try
Code:
yum groupinstall "X Window System" Desktop
and see what happens, but honestly, if running an update from Red Hat broke something on your system, this is *EXACTLY* why you pay for RHEL support.
::EDIT:: Just noticed you were trying to run X as root...that is a HORRIBLE idea. Try logging in as a regular user, and starting X then.
you MUST!!!!!!!!! reinstall the driver after EVERY!!!!! Kernel, xorg, and mesa update
Ok. But how?

Why? I'm guessing for usual root security? I used root because I was trying to fix my problem and installing certain things needed SU priveleges.
Running X as a normal user gives pretty much the same text.
The same way you installed it before. Did you install the proprietary nVidia drivers? If so, you read the instructions, so they continue to be valid.

"Pretty much"?? What's different?
And as said, unless you install the drivers for your video hardware, X won't work. And again, have you contacted RHEL support????
