Hi all, I'm new, probably just like many of those you see here who post and then disappear. I'll try not to.
I just built a Linux box consisting of a PIII 550, 256MB PC133, WD 10GB, SB Live! 5.1, and HP CD/RW. I'll be honest and say its a backup play machine to my WinXP machine (heresy!). I'm eager to learn Linux because I just recently learned that it existed. Wierd, huh? Anyway, my hopes are that I can fill up that 10GB hard drive with music and hook it up to my stereo via a y-adapter and some RCA cables, just like I did with my XP machine.
There's just a slight problem - I can't seem to get RH9 to detect my soundcard. I click on the red hat, go to System Settings, and then to Soundcard Detection. It says I have no soundcard, yet I do - it's hooked up to a PCI slot. I swtiched it around to different PCI slots, all to no avail, so I have decided to come here to ask for help. Does anybody have any ideas on what to do? I'm just learning the commands to do stuff, so I'm hardly capable of just typing in some cool little tricks and making it work.
have you made sure the system is recogizizing the card exists ie run lspci and it's listed, it could also be a bios setting you may have to disable built in mobo sound if it exists.
You already got the answers, however, I'd just like to give u a complete one....
1. Since you have WinXP, note down the settings for your SB SoundCard......i mean the
IRQ
DMA1
DMA2
IO-Address
2. Now run the following command
sndconfig
3. You will get a configuration window....use the settings that u noted above to fill in the information.
4. Now, as root, give the following command
modprobe sb
'sb' is the name of the module for Sound Blaster soundcard...Hopefully, it should work.....This command will load the device driver or the module in main memory.
5. Now You can use your fav mp3 player mplayer/xmms or any other to listen to any mp3 or cdplayer to listen to CDs..note that in redhat 9, the mp3 plugin has been removed...so you will need to download it from the internet....
I hope now you will be able to enjoy music on your machine...
side note the SB 5.1 card uses the module emu10k1 so when you run modprobe use
modprobe emu10k1 but I will say one other thing from what I've seen don't get discouraged if it still doesn't work there are many posting here relating to the SB 5.1 card giving people trouble
