No Boot Manager in RedHat 9.0
Hello everyone,
I recently installed RedHat 9.0 in my system. While installing i chose to keep the boot loader unchanged ( thus i didn't select lilo or grub). I already had Win 98, XP and Slackware installed. My plan was to boot in to RedHat 9.0 with the boot up floppy for the first time, then make the necessary changes in lilo.conf through the Boot Manager in the Control Center and then create an image of root which i would copy in my primary partition (Win 98) and then make the necessary additions in boot.ini to get the option of RedHat 9.0 while booting. I had done this successfully for Slackware. But there is no Boot Manager in the Control Center in RH 9. Also i couldn't find any lilo.conf anywhere and thus couldn't make the changes in it. So the current boot image of RH 9 is not working. How will i do the changes in lilo.conf or do i have to install lilo for that. I dont want to corrupt the bootloader already existing. Why isn't there any Boot Manager option in the Control Center? Thanx in advance for your help. Cheers |
At the prompt type: grub-install /dev/hda
if hda is where you want to put it. - Otherwise type the partion where you want grub installed This will put grub in the MBR of the hd that you specify... NOTE: Overwriting the MBR might make it difficult for certain operating systems to start unless the installation is done in a certain sequence i.e. first DOS, then Windows then Linux etc... If possible make a backup of the MBR before installing the boot loader. Hope this gets you on the way.... BTW - you might need to be root to install grub.... been a while since I did a reinstall ;-) |
And if you can't boot RH - Use a CD Rom - Type "Linux Rescue" at the prompt, then follow the above procedure...

Hello everyone,
Thanx for the replies. I finally solved the problem. First i copied lilo.conf from the already installed Slackware into the /etc directory in RH 9. Then i edited the file and ran the lilo command. Then i created the boot image which i copied into the primary partition (Win 98) and made the necessary additions in boot.ini. Now i get the RH 9 option at startup and it works. Phew!!! I actually didn't want to install any new bootloader as too many risks were there. Skyline, i use KDE in RH 9. Still i dont see any Boot Manager option under System Administration in the Control Center. Maybe i should have installed lilo for that. Anyway everything else is fine now. Cheers everyone. |
