NIC Bonding

I am running Red Hat Enterprise 4 . I have two NIC's bonded in a Active/Standy for fault tolerance currently. I was wondering if anybody has bonded four ethernet interfaces in a fault tolerance state. So I would like to have two interfaces set in one active bonded channel going to one switch and two other intefaces bonded in a standby channel going to another switch. So if both active interfaces fail than the standby bonded channel will start passing traffic. Is this possible? Has anybody tried this? I hope this makes sense. What I am trying to achieve is improved performance to my Red Hat servers.

What if you bond two NICs to a bond0 device then bond the 3rd NIC and bond0 to a bond1 device? Not sure that is possible since bond0 isn't a regular interface but it might work.
