Boy, I hope someone has an idea about this, the server we use at school with all the studeent accounts on it is not able to export their home directories...

Today I noticed that when I boot up my client (the server is running RH 9.0, the client is running RHEL 4.0) I noticed that none of the exported NFS directories were available. I checked the following services:

nfs
rpc.mountd
rpc.nfsd
rpc.rquotad

and they were all dead. I was able to start all of the rpc daemons by entering them from the command line, but when I try to start or restart nfs OR when I try to use exportfs -r the response is to display all of the exports and then hang.

Any ideas what's going on????

did you check to see if the "portmapper" is running?

# service portmap start

yes, and it was. I have nfs running again, but I had to re-install the binaries.

That doesn't sound right. You shouldn't really need to re-install binaries to get nfs back up and running again. I would investigate this issue further by looking at log files and doing system traces. Does this box have some kind of IDS (snort or tripwire) installed? If so, you can tell if your binaries got changed.
