New to Linux and needing some assistance

Before I begin I will say I am VERY new to linux in any shape or form and so am not too certain about how to do very much.

Ok, so onto the problem...

I recently installed Linux Redhat 9 (saturday morning) and am unable to set up my sound card.

In Windows it is shown as a "C-Media AC97 Audio Device," however I appear to be unable to set up the sound card in any way. I know that it is integrated with my Motherboard, but am unsure if that makes any difference to anything.

I did find one driver claiming to be drivers for the device, but I was unable to follow the instructions as any directories it referred to did not exist on my system. As far as I can remember it also had a reference to red hat 6. (I am not sure as I cannot check at the moment due to AOL not having a linux version and hence I am stuck with windows)

Thanks in advance for any help,
Graeme Nimmo

Check your mixer, Sound and Video-->Sound Mixer, make sure all levels are up. Then System Settings-->Sound Card Configuration. See if that works. I thought Redhat 9 had support built in for AC97.

Just another wee bit I should have added to the above post, it said it couldn't detect any sound cards.

Will go and check the mixer settings now and see if that above little bit is irrelevant.

Thanks for that

Mine did the same thing, but it worked. The sound was terrible though, so bought a sound card. One thing to check, see in PnP OS is turned on in your BIOS. If so, turn it off. It generally interferes with Linux's ability to find things.

Ok, just tried that thing you suggested, bad news... When I tried to open sound mixer I got an error message...

"Unable to open '/dev/mixer'. Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer' amd that you have sound support in your kernel."

Can any solutions to this be suggested?

Oh, by the way, when I went tried to detect my soundcard it said "No soundcard detected"

I am now thinking that if I can't get sound then I may just ditch what seems to be a great operating system.
