network error message

I'm seeing a new to me error message on a new install of RH4 update3.

When stopping or starting network services & when booting up I'll see this message:
Localhost ifup: interface 'dev917' not found

dev 917 is one of over 1000 of these same type of dev devices that are not found. I've no clue why this system is looking for them or why I'm gettting these messages.
Any clues appreciated.
TIA!!!!

Hi there,

It looks as though you tried configuring some device on your box with the wrong driver, probably. Can you tell us approximately as to when you started seeing these messages? That'd enable us to focus on a more specifically targeted area.
