Mozilla V1.4: How to match font in V1.2?

I installed Mozilla V1.4 and have the same problem that I see many others have had, the fonts are horrendous. I've spent several hours reading posted replies and followed the instructions to install the True Type fonts. Well, I tried every one of them and, while an improvement over the fonts that came with V1.4, they still suck.

What I want to know is why can't I simply get the same font that I've got with V1.2? Under Edit->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts all of the options are designated as [System Default] in V1.2, but this is not one of the choices in V1.4. So how does one find out what the System Default Font is and how to designate it to be used by Mozilla V1.4?

i think earlier versions of mozilla were compiled with some font system (XFT i think it is?) that the newer versions don't have. you have to find an older XFT-enabled version and install that instead. i think the RH8 binaries have it.

I found the following site with a download for Mozilla V1.4 XFT-enabled, downloading it now. I'll update with the results (probably tomorrow). Thanks for the tip.

The download of the XFT version of Mozilla v1.4 from the afforementioned web-site does give the same font as v1.2 except for the menus, address bar & icons. If anyone has any insight as to how the fonts for the menus are controlled, it would be appreciated.

the mozilla 1.4 build you find on http://www.scottbolander.com/mozilla-xft.html is XFT enabled for the gecko layout engine only (which is the engine to display the website you visit with anti-aliased fonts).

if you want to change the mozilla menu font, edit the file userChrome.css (if i'm not wrong). check out http://flii.blomp.com/

cheers

Yes that works.

I used the sample file in:

defaults/profile/chrome/userChrome-example.css
(subdir under mozilla install dir)

which I copied to the subdir of my home dir:

.mozilla/default/e5egmpss.slt/chrome/userChrome.css

I put in the following code:

* {
font-family: sans-serif !important
}
* {
font-size: 10pt !important
}

Now I have the exact fonts in Mozilla V1.4 (for everything) as what I had with v1.2 which is what came with the Redhat V9 distribution. Thanks for the help.
