Movie Player / Codecs


Hi everyone,

I am the nOObiest of nOObs when it comes to linux and would lie some advice. I have just installed Red Hat 9 on my compaq n610c laptop and would like to know what software to use ( and how to install it ) for movie playback ie DVD, divx etc

You can also use the Xine project (xine.sourceforge.net). I have found (Compaq 17DX460 running Slackware 9 w/ KDE 3.2) that Xine is better supported and crashes less. Furthermore, if you choose to use the Kaffeine front-end for Xine you can have in-browser streaming video playback.

Love the mplayer project too though, as sometimes it will play video that Xine will not.

Thanks guys,

just downloaded mplayer, now how do i install it......doh these nOObs.......

If you downloaded the .tar.gz file, which you should have seeing as you are running Slackware, simply do the following: open a console and navigate to the directory where you saved the file. Then type in "tar xfz " and then the file name. Open the newly created directory and type in the following: su -c "./cofigure && make && make install" and at the password prompt type in you ROOT password.

Im not running slackware im running Red Hat 9, and i downloaded the RPM's, just not sure what to do with them, im a migrating windows boy.....lol
