Major Bandwidth Slowdown (HELP!)

Hello, I have run a rh9 server for about 3 months now. With little problems. I use it for HTTP, Invision board, Gallery and a blog script. My problem is I have just experienced a major slowdown (from the client end) and Im not sure why.

I usually dont boot into x, but when I do it doesnt seem like the server is actually slow...only when Im browsing from a client do I notice the problem... The other day I had a check force problem, so I did the fsck and just said yes to everything could this be causing the problem?

The site is swclinux.lhbe.edu.on.ca/news/index.php

I am having my schools network technician check to see if its a bandwidth problem but I dont think thats it... Should I install a root kit? I dont have very many ports open so I doubt Ive been hacked.... I really have no idea where to start so any help would be good.

Thanks in advance

Gino

I get 80msec pings off your server and index.php (just the HTML) comes down at 15K/sec. I get the whole page (images and all) in 2.806 seconds, which doesn't strike me as slow, though it does take markedly longer in a browser. Are you doing any heavy computation in your PHP that would take longer on a browser than wget -p?

I'd probably start by making sure that the server can do forward and reverse DNS ok (/etc/resolv.conf), and that it knows it's own name and IP (/etc/hosts).

Well, I really havent changed anything in the last couple days, and its a LOT slower...

I notice a slowdown even when i look at directories like swclinux.lakeheadschools.ca/temp/ (no index file...)

My logs dont seem to suggest anything weird...

Try this:

Code:
[dante on GOD]$ time wget -q -p swclinux.lakeheadschools.ca/temp/
real 0m2.653s
user 0m0.005s
sys 0m0.004s
2.6 seconds isn't too bad by my standards. Our akamaized corporate site with more bandwidth than you can imagine takes 2.7 (though there is a lot more content there).

Have you looked at netstat to see if you have an unusual amount of connections? Is the load on the box high? Are there any transmission errors (netstat -i)?

Yeah, it must be a network problem

Yeah funny thing, its faster OUTSIDE the network then it is INSIDE the network (I realized that once I got home).'

It must be something the Tech in my school can fix, I think they placed some new routers in the building so I might have to change some routes or something.

Thanks for helping!

Something else I just thought of -- Check the speed and duplex of all the equipment between you and the server at the school. Cisco switches are notorious for not advertising media correctly. You may have to force 100mbit-FDX on your interfaces.
