LTO compressed backup using tar in RH Linux

Hi

We have recently installed a RH Linux server with 4 LTO-3 tape drives. I am from UNIX background and am used to finding /dev/rmt/tps16d3, /dev/rmt/tps16d3nr ,/dev/rmt/tps16d3c,/dev/rmt/tps16d3nrc etc for any given tapedrive. The 3rd one is what I use for writing in compressed mode.

In RHEL, I found no entry in /dev for LTO in compressed mode. I want to use it for tar or cpio. I also want the backups to be platform independent ( to be read in Sun, SGI, AIX etc). Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

/dev/stX or /dev/nstX (the "n" for non sequential)
man tar/cpio for compression options, as far as I remember they are there
