Low FPS in RH9
I have RH9 installed on my compaq presario, PIII 450. Ive tired playing Tuxracer, but cant because its to slow. glgears gives me a frame rate from 58 to 127, not exactly what it should be at.
The vid card is the S3 Savage4, and the redhat config xfree86 tells me im using the savage driver, so im not sure what else to change to get a good frame rate.
Thanx in advance

I am doubting there is alot you can do to get a better FPS.
Sorry but I am not sure anyone else will have an answer either but at least its a bump and reply.

Surely it is, try verifying that you have DRI enabled:
Code:
$ glxinfo | grep direct
You should see:
direct rendering: Yes/No
But to be honest by those numbers you most probably are using DRI (127 fps in glxgears with a 450 Mhz processor in pure software, I should see that! I get ~300 without DRI in my XP 1800+)

Ok, you should pay a visit to dri.sf.net and see if there are updated drivers for XFree86 4.3 (the version you have in RH9) for you video card, other than that I couldn't say much. You must surely will have to build the driver from source, make sure to read all the documentation on the page.

Im in windows right now, but I remember in one of the config files that it was created in '99, so im pretty sure its a 3.x version, so i downloaded and installed 4.3. After rebooting, i get to the X login screen, but theres the console logger in the bottom right hand corner, and i cant get to KDE, Gnome, or anything else other than TWM. after trying the switch desk and all that junk, ive reinstalled RH9...
so, to kind of changethe theme ofthe thread, how do i install X 4.3 w/o having it do that?
i have the savage driver, but it wants 4.3, so in kinda stuck as to what to do...

You're in luck... Red Hat 9 installs XFree4.3! So you have nothing else to do but to install the drivers!
