Lost my KDE GUI in root
I recently installed RH9 and was playing around with the Desktop Switching tool. I only have KDE installed, and changed the option from KDE to TWM. After re-starting X I get a black screen with an 'X' cursor. Left clicking brings up a TWM menu with the only usable option being to open an x terminal. There's a bunch of stuff on there about focus, etc, but I'm kinda lost without my happy little KDE menu to play with. :)
When I log in as a regular user everything is cool. This only affects the GUI when logged in a root. Any advice? |
The GUI you are describing is twm. It's probably the most low-tech window manager out there. Can't you use the same desktop switching tool to switch back to KDE?
Why are you using a GUI as root anyhow? I'd recommend against it. Just use a terminal window and 'su -' to do administrative tasks. |
Thanks wapcaplet.
I found the command to run the Desktop Switching Tool. For those who may be looking for a similar solution, just open the x-term in TWM and type 'switchdesk' without the quotes. This will launch the tool and you can change to anything other than TWM. 8-)! Your point about logging in as root is well taken. Thank you! |
