NEVER MIND <<< if found it

I have a user I just upgraded from rh9 to rhel3ws he is having the following problem:

"I have to manually reset the printer queues in order to print anything. I go into Redhat's print manager, open any print queue, and then press "Apply", exit the print manager, and all the queues will then work."

I am new to RedHat so I am probably missing something very simple.

Thanks.

turned out the setup here is standard to stop cups and install lpd. i didn't.
