Logging in and getting login prompt again
Hi,
RH9. The only things I did since my last login was an 'up2date -u' (after about 1 week to 10 days of no updates) and I installed America's Army, which made me edit an nVidia file in /etc. I noticed the whole XFree86 got updated from RHN, so I rebooted the machine. Now when I log in I give correct username and password, but as soon as I do, the login prompt returns afresh. This is only happening on my normal user account. Root can log in fine. This is a text log in, not a graphical login. I thought it was the password, but I changed that and I still get the same result. I also tried ssh'ing into the box, but I get "connection closed" as soon as I provide the info. I'm stumped. Thanks for any help. Dave |
have you tried reconfiguring the Xfree86 congiguration? ie: changing it back to the way ist was before?

Anyone else seen similar behavior? This is wack. I'd like to not have to re-create my user account....

Okay, I created a brand new user account to log in with and got the same damned thing, enter passwd, hit "enter" and get the username prompt again. Odd.
Gonna re-edit that nVidia file to see if that isn't it. |
Okay, it was that file. The file was /etc/security.console.perms . For some reason the nVidia README told me to comment out a line in there, but that caused this problem. *phewww!*
Glad that's over. |
