Unhappy kernel-2.6.6 compilation for AMD64?

I have been "google-ing" and searching this forum for days but cannot seem to find a solution for my problem...

My system:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
1024MB DDR RAM
Asus ATI Radeon 9200
200GB Seagate Barracuda

I have read somthing about ATI cards not working with a 64-bit kernel but that does not worry me too much...
My problem is I cannot even get into a 64-bit kernel~!

This is the beginning part of a .config file I got from some Gentoo site:
CONFIG_X86_64=y
CONFIG_64BIT=y
CONFIG_X86=y
CONFIG_MMU=y
CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK=y
CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG=y
CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK=y
CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y
CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y
CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y

This is mine:
CONFIG_X86=y
CONFIG_MMU=y
CONFIG_UID16=y
CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y

AFAIK, bzImage should appear in the usr/src/kernel-2.6.x/arch/x86_64/boot/ instead of usr/src/kernel-2.6.x/arch/i386/boot/

Any ideas what might have went wrong?
Or am I using an unsuitable distro?
Any help is much appreciated~

Cheers~
~WiLL~
