Question Is it possible to lock the audio device?

I want to know whether it is possible to permanently assign the sound device to xmms, when it is open. When i use xmms, i have this annoying experience that the xmms prompting an error saying "couldnt open audio..." when it switch tracks, and i will have to click play again.

If it is not possible to lock the device from within xmms, whether is it possible to shutup other application's audio outputs when i am using xmms, ie to redirect them to /dev/null or like that, or do my redhat8.0 provide any setups to control such like behaviors of applications?

thanks
