Installing gcc-2.95.3 and glibc-2.2.5 on Red Hat 9

Hello all,

I'm sure this question's been asked before, but i've looked everywere for
a direct solution without any luck.

I've got a fresh install of Redhat 9 and what I'd like to do is downgrade
gcc 3.2.2 to 2.95.3 and glibc2.3.2 to 2.2.5.

I have to use these lower versions in order to compile and use some older software.

What is the best procedure for doing this?

Here's what I tried.

I downloaded gcc 2.95.3 and installed it into /usr/local/lib. That worked
fine.

I continued with the setup of my box and just when I thought I had
everything running, I ran into the following linking problem:
undefined reference to `__ctype_b'
undefined reference to `__ctype_tolower'

After some research, I determined that it was because gcc 2.95.3 was
compiled with glibc 2.3.2 (please tell me if this logic is wrong).

So I decided to install glibc 2.2.5. It installed fine, so I decided to
re-install gcc 2.95.3 to work against it. That was 3 hours ago.

I can't get gcc 2.95.3 or the original /usr/bin/gcc to work properly.

Someone, please tell me what the proper procedure is for installing gcc
2.95.3 and glibc 2.2.5 on a box that already has gcc 3.2.2 and glibc
2.3.2

Unfortunately, using the default gcc (and leaving well enough alone)
isn't an option.

Any help appreciated,

Shane.

LOL, your going to have probs because the glibc 3.2.2 libraries are what is compiled against the kernel headers you are using.............IF you go to an earlier version of glibc.....................we cant be held responsible for what your system may or may not do..............LOL

kernel 2.6 modification

While the original post did not categorize the problem as such, it seems to me that the question here is the same Catch-22 question that I am encountering with regards to kernel modification.

The README for kernel work with the latest kernel shipped with the SuSE 9.1 distribution makes it clear that no version of the GNU cc compiler after 2.95.3 is considered safe. So, if you go to the cygwin folks to see if they can resurrect a binary for an i386 machine that old, you strike out. At best you can find an RPM file with the source for gcc 2.95.3. Now who wants to try to compile a downlevel version of the compiler using the more current executable that you've just installed from the SuSE release?

If anyone can provide an archived version of the binaries [and libraries, of course] that need to be installed in order to be able to safely/confidently move forward with kernel work, I'm sure it would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
