Installing Fedora on Laptop > GeForce FX 5200 Go

Hello All,

When trying to install the Fedora beta 3 version, I encounter the following errors: Trying to use graphical mode installation -> crazy screen, nothing readable, everything blurry and squares and flashy green. What the hell?
Trying to use text mode: install done perfectly. Starting up: Red screen after startup. Can't do or see anytyhing. What the hell again?

When I booted my Fedora, he recognizes my "Geforce FX generic" card, but graphical setup fails. What should I do now? I can't do anything with the installed version of linux -- a red screen...

Help!?!!
P.S.: laptop Dell Inspiron 5150 with GeForce FX 5200 Go

You need to grab the linux driver off the NVIDIA site. They're not included in the RedHat CDs for copyright reasons. You'll need the kernel-source RPM installed, )I think it's on disk 2 of the installation CDs.

The driver is under IA32 - you'll see what I mean when you look at the drivers page.

I'm having this same problem. I'm a pretty big noob, so here goes the noobish question...

Do I need to do the text install and then install this update? And I also assume I need to log in to the text console of Fedora to install this and then I can use the GUI ?

Thanks for the help.

Hi.

Yeah, you'll have to do the text install. There's a nvidia driver included, but it won't do hardware acceleration. You'll have to edit /etc/X11/XFConfig in order to use it, though.

Once you've got some sort of GUI up using the included 'nv' driver, you can grab the proper driver from the nVidia site and install.

And yes, you'll need to kill your X Windows session and drop down into a command line to install the driver. (The driver comes as an executable, so it's really easy to install).

Dave

P.S. Read the readme that comes with the driver - some editing of XFConfig is required.

I was able to get this solved and wanted to post back about my experience.

After the initial Fedora install, I had to press 'I' during the initial load of Fedora to perform a step by step load. Then when prompted about running the 'First Load' service, I declined, which sent me to a text login. From there I was able to perform the install of the nVidia driver and also use 'vi' to edit the XFConfig.

There were some other posts here helpful in showing how to lower the run level to 3 and then put in the driver, edit the config and then restart X, so I will not rehash that. I just wanted to cover the basic steps I followed.

Thanks everyone for your help

Trying to use text mode: install done perfectly. Starting up: Red screen after startup. Can't do or see anytyhing. What the hell again?

When I booted my Fedora, he recognizes my "Geforce FX generic" card, but graphical setup fails. What should I do now? I can't do anything with the installed version of linux -- a red screen... "
