install rpm depndencies - SAMBA

Guys,

I'm trying to install SAMBA on a RHEL4 machine. Didn't install it on installation, but now we need it.

I've copied samba, samba-common, samba-client, samba-swat, openssl into the server and tried to run the installation via "rpm -ivh"

Problem is, or rather, it managed to detect the (lack of) dependencies and stop installation.

But how do I know what other rpm package to use to fulfil these dependcies? Is it possible to make it search for it... if I copy ALL the rpms into a directory of the server? Some kind of hot search of some sort...

and its for Samba... what else do I need?

Thanks people!

Yes you can do what you ask,

First you need a few things, get and install both yum and createrepo rpm packages from Dag Wieers's site; http://dag.wieers.com/packages/

Next create your repo location (lets call it /RHEL4 for now) on the hard drive and copy all the rpm files from the CD's or DVD media to this common location. Then from that location type something like; createrepo /RHEL4

When done you can then use this with yum but first you need to create a RHEL-MEDIA.repo file in /etc/yum.repo.d directory;

[rhel-media]
name=Red Hat-$releasever - Media
baseurl=file:///RHEL4
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0

Then you should be able to install samba and all the dependencies by simply typing something like; yum -y install samba samba-swat

Yes yum does work with RHEL4, just not for updates from RHN. In fact the next version of RHEL will use yum for updates, so it might be a good idea to get used to using yum.

If you have a valid RHN subscription then use up2date to install samba. You can also use the package manager tool (system-config-packages) for RHEL4 to install samba if you have a GUI desktop installed.

Installing samba via rpm is possible, but takes a fair amount of work to figure out what additional packages are required and what they require, welcome to dependency hell!!! I have given you a good way to resolve this issue. please try it. The whole process takes less time is provides a very good tool for future usage.

hello swako,
Try using gui mode to insatall samba. through add and remove programs.
All u need to check the samba check box and update it.
Then linux will ask u for the particular cd's insert when required and i think that it will be done.

OR

1) Copy all the RPMS for samba into a folder
2) cd to that folder
3) run the following commands:
rpm -ivh samaba-3.0.10-*.rpm --aid --force.
4) this was the basic rpm required n then install samba-common and then samba-client and lastly system-config-samba.
5) this should work and dont forget to put in --aid in the command
