'localhost' is the default name given to a machine which has not had a name setup for it during install. And being the enterprise version of redhat, which is made primarily for servers, it has no desktop GUI so you have arrived at the commandline also known as runlevel3. You should be able to type in the root name where it says 'localhost login' and then enter your password and it should log you in.

Kajensen says WS, it means Work Station, not server. Even with AS you can install GUI.
Kajensen, version 2.1 is very old. so the best would be to try 4.0. you can even give a chance to www.centos.org. It's recompiled RH AS but with free updates.
Regarding you question, I don't understand exactly, but when you get login prompt (or GUI) type root for login and then your root passwd.

Mario
Ok didn't realise it was a work station, i have RHE 2.1 and it was the server version. Yes it is a very old version, if possible I would update to something a little newer.
Both of you guys clarified some items. Thanks. I made some progress, but now I have another problem.
At localhost I typed root
At rootlocalhost I typed my password
I then typed startx
Made progress here but then:
Fatal Server Error
No Valid Modes Found
There is a list of SVGA specifications. The following are checked:
videoram 1024 K
using 16 bpp depth 16
Now the way I see this is that this old laptop is running 16 bit video with 1 Mg of Ram -- and this will not support X Windows
I could either reinstall OS with lowres or find a better hardware match in the list.
I'll wait for your response before I try this.
OK glad to help ecen if it was a little bit.
Probably not the xserver that is having the problem but the desktop GUI, Redhat installs either Gnome or KDE. Both of these take a fair size of ram and video/ram to run. And 1MB certainly wont be able run them.
If by chance it may have also installed some of the lighter desktop managers, since its been a few years since i used RHE 2.1 I cannot remember if they installed other desktop managers.
If your lucky you might have Enlightenment or IceWm, these are realy light weight destop managers that should work with that small amount of ram and video/ram.
Might need to google to find out if there installed and how to use them as the default desktop manager.
